Pix with Biometrics (JSR): One-Click Pix Without Redirects, Explained
Pix changed how Brazilians pay, but online it still has one weak point: the redirect. The buyer copies a code or scans a QR code, leaves the store, opens the bank app, logs in, confirms and then tries to find their way back. Every step is a chance to lose the sale. Pix biometrics is the Central Bank's answer to that problem. Using the Pix JSR (Jornada Sem Redirecionamento, or "journey without redirection"), a buyer can link their bank account once and then pay future purchases with a fingerprint or face scan, without leaving the merchant's site or app. This plain-English guide explains what Pix biometrics is, how 1-click Pix works, what Pix on file means, the limits and security model, and what it means for online sellers.
02
What is Pix biometrics?
Pix biometrics (in Portuguese, "Pix por biometria") is a way to pay with Pix inside a merchant's checkout and confirm the payment with the phone's biometric authentication, such as a fingerprint or facial recognition. After a one-time setup, the buyer does not need to open their banking app, copy a code or scan a QR code.
Pix biometrics is built on the Pix JSR, a framework launched by the Central Bank of Brazil that went live on 28 February 2025, together with Pix por aproximação (contactless Pix). JSR uses Brazil's Open Finance infrastructure and payment initiators (ITPs, or Iniciadores de Transação de Pagamento) to start Pix payments on the buyer's behalf, with the buyer's consent.
In short:
Pix por aproximação brings JSR to physical stores: the buyer taps their phone on a terminal (Android, through digital wallets).
Pix biometrics brings JSR to online commerce: the buyer confirms in the checkout with biometrics, on Android and iPhone.
03
First purchase: linking the account
At checkout, the buyer chooses Pix with biometrics (often labeled "Pay with 1 click" or similar).
The buyer selects their bank and is redirected to it once to authorize the link. This consent allows the payment initiator to start future Pix payments from that account without a redirect.
The buyer confirms in the bank app and returns to the store. The device is registered and bound to the account.
04
Next purchases: 1-click Pix
On later purchases, the buyer chooses the same option at checkout.
The phone asks for the fingerprint or face scan.
The Pix is initiated and confirmed without leaving the store. The buyer sees the approval on the same screen.
This is why the experience is often called 1-click Pix: after the first link, paying feels as simple as using a saved card.
05
What does "Pix on file" mean?
Pix on file is a market term for this same idea: the buyer's Pix payment method is "stored" with the merchant or payment provider, just as cards are stored for one-click purchases. Strictly speaking, the merchant does not store a Pix key or bank password. What is stored is the authorization (consent) for a payment initiator to start future Pix payments, bound to the buyer's device and protected by biometrics.
Pix on file brings Pix closer to the convenience of saved cards, without the card-specific risks such as card numbers leaking or chargebacks.
06
Security: why Pix biometrics is safe
The security model of Pix biometrics combines several layers:
One-time consent at the bank. The buyer authorizes the link inside their own banking environment.
Device binding. The authorization is tied to the specific device used for the link.
Biometric authentication with FIDO2. Reporting on the Brazilian market describes JSR as using the FIDO2 standard to bind biometric authentication to the device hardware. The biometric data stays on the phone; it is not shared with the merchant.
Limits. At launch, the Central Bank set a default maximum of R$ 500 per transaction for these journeys, and buyers can set lower per-transaction and daily limits.
Revocable consent. The buyer can cancel the link at any time.
Limits are evolving. For Pix por aproximação, the Central Bank published Normative Instruction 746 removing the R$ 500 default cap from 1 October 2026, allowing users to set higher limits within their account's daily limits. Check current rules for the online biometric journey with your payment provider, as discussions about raising limits, especially for companies, are ongoing.

Why Pix JSR matters for conversion
For online sellers, the main benefit of Pix JSR is fewer abandoned payments. The traditional Pix flow has several drop-off points:
Traditional online Pix
Pix biometrics (JSR)
Copy the code or scan the QR code
Choose Pix with 1 click
Leave the store and open the bank app
Stay in the store
Log in to the bank app
Confirm with fingerprint or face
Paste the code and confirm
Payment approved on the same screen
Return to the store
Already there
Specialists quoted in Brazilian fintech press report conversion rates above 90% for the biometric journey, and a Visa survey cited in the same coverage found that 70% of Brazilians would link their bank details to a store for future purchases. Results will vary by merchant and audience, but removing the redirect clearly addresses one of the biggest causes of unpaid Pix orders.
08
Pix biometrics on iPhone and Android
One important difference from contactless Pix: Pix biometrics does not depend on NFC. Contactless Pix in physical stores relies on NFC through digital wallets, which is restricted on iPhone. Pix biometrics in online checkouts uses the phone's biometric authentication instead, so it works on both Android and iPhone.
09
What's next for Pix JSR
The market is already discussing the next evolution of JSR. Planned or discussed improvements include:
Desktop support, where a buyer on a computer confirms the payment with biometrics on their phone.
Integration with Pix Automático, so recurring payments (subscriptions, memberships, utilities) can be authorized with biometrics after a one-time link.
Smarter journeys that combine payment consent with balance information, so initiators can anticipate failures caused by insufficient funds.
These features depend on Central Bank rules and on adoption by banks and payment providers, so timelines can change.

What Pix biometrics means for online sellers today
Pix biometrics is an important step for Brazilian e-commerce, but adoption is still growing. Banks, payment initiators and checkout platforms are rolling it out gradually, and many buyers have not linked an account yet. Meanwhile, the traditional Pix QR code and copy-and-paste flow remains the way most online Pix payments happen.
For sellers, the practical takeaways are:
Optimize your current Pix flow first. A clean QR code on desktop, an easy copy-and-paste code on mobile, real-time confirmation and fast recovery of unpaid Pix orders already make a big difference. See our guide on how to recover unpaid Pix payments.
Keep Pix and card in the same checkout, so buyers who hit a limit or prefer installments can switch.
Watch your Pix generation-to-payment rate. If many buyers generate a Pix and do not pay, redirect friction is likely part of the cause, and 1-click Pix will matter more to you as it spreads.
Follow your provider's roadmap for Pix JSR and Pix on file.
AtomicPay's Pix checkout uses the QR code and copy-and-paste flow with real-time confirmation, D0 settlement and sales recovery for buyers who generated a Pix but did not pay. Conclusion
Pix biometrics, powered by the Pix JSR, removes the biggest friction in online Pix: leaving the store to pay. After a one-time link, buyers can make 1-click Pix payments with a fingerprint or face scan, using a Pix on file authorization that keeps their bank credentials and biometric data private. Adoption is still growing, and limits and features are evolving, but the direction is clear: Pix is becoming as convenient as a saved card. Until it becomes universal, the best strategy is a fast, well-optimized Pix checkout with recovery for unpaid orders. Create your free AtomicPay account to start accepting Pix today.
12
Do buyers need a special app to use Pix biometrics?
No new app is required in most cases. The buyer uses their existing bank account and phone. They link the account once through their bank, and then confirm future payments with the biometrics already set up on their phone. Availability depends on the buyer's bank and on the merchant's payment provider supporting the journey.
13
Does the merchant see or store the buyer's fingerprint or face data?
No. Biometric data stays on the buyer's device and is used only to unlock the authorization locally. The merchant and payment provider receive the payment confirmation, not the biometric data, and they never receive the buyer's bank password.
15
Is 1-click Pix the same as Pix Automático?
No. 1-click Pix with biometrics is for payments the buyer actively confirms each time, such as a new purchase. Pix Automático is for recurring charges the buyer authorizes once, such as a monthly subscription, which are then debited on schedule. The two may be combined in the future, with biometrics used to authorize recurring payments.
16
Does Pix biometrics change Pix settlement for sellers?
No. A Pix made through the biometric journey is still a Pix: it is confirmed in real time, and settlement to the merchant follows the payment provider's normal Pix terms. What changes is the buyer's experience before payment, not the money flow after it.
